High Street Teeth Whitening Could Harm
Teeth whitening is offered to us everywhere on the high street, however the trend to have them done in the town centre salons and beauty clinics that offer cheap and convenient teeth whitening can be putting us all at risk.
An article recently shown on the BBC news website informed us all of a report commissioned by Which magazine which highlighted the fact that many salons use untrained staff to carry out teeth whitening on their clients, in fact the General Dental Council (GDC) states that is actually illegal for any one except a qualified Dentist to carry out Teeth Whitening on consumers.
The GDC has launched investigations into this process following visits to a number of salons by which reporters. Habia – the governing body of these beauty salons state that salons could have been confused by the regulations.
The Concerns
The main concern found in the investigation was the substances used by salons to whiten the teeth – namely chlorine peroxide, and hydrogen peroxide, these if used at the incorrect levels by untrained staff can cause harm to the teeth and the gums, this coupled with the salons failure to check for teeth and gum disease prior to treatment could put consumers dental health at risk
While it may be illegal for a non dentist to carry out these procedures on someone else, it is perfectly legal and acceptable for someone to purchase an approved teeth whitening kit and treat themselves at home.
It is important that when considering buying a teeth whitening kit for home use that the buyers check that the kit is certified and clinically tested. The buyers should go for a well established product with a proven track record.
