Gel That Stops Hair Growing
Scientists in the USA have discovered that a drug, primarily used to treat eye infections, can, when added to a rub on gel, stop or slow the re-growth of hair.
Could Shaving Our Legs Be A Thing Of The Past
Scientists in Pennsylvania discovered that the drug – called Cidofovir, when mixed with topical gel
stopped hair regrowth in test subjects for 6 weeks.
Cidofovir is widely used to treat viral eye infections and in high doses can be used to treat those suffering with aids, it was in those patients that cases of alopecia were discovered, and once the link with cidfovir was discovered, they set to work trying to develop a product that would reduce and even potentially stop the need for shaving or expensive hair removal treatments.
It is estimated that the average woman spends around £12000 on hair removal during her lifetime.
In the studies, scientists experimented with different concentrations of the drug, mixes between 1 and 3% concentration were tried on male test subjects to see if hair growth could be stopped completely.
The men were told to rub the 1% gel on one side of their faces and 3% on the other, they were also told to continue shaving as normal, stopping 48 hours before returning to the clinic for assessment.
The results showed that the gel containing 3% concentration caused a significant reduction in hair re growth when compared to the other side of the face.
Trials are continuing to see if Cidofivor can be incorporated into a gel suitable for general release.
